In engleza forma negativa a unei propozitii se formeaza folosind una din urmatoarele forme:

  1. do not - deobicei se contracteaza in don't: se foloseste cu verbe care nu sunt compuse. Acesta este negativul simplu, fara alte intelesuri.
  2. not - daca timpul verbului este compus (i am not, i will not = i won't, i have not = i haven't etc)
  3. must not - se poate contracta in mustn't: are intelesul de 'nu e voie' sau 'nu trebuie'.
  4. can not - deobicei se contracteaza in can't: inseamna 'nu se poate'

Una din aceste forme se pune inaintea verbului

Acest auxiliar este cel care se conjuga in timp ce verbul care primeste negatia ramane cu forma de infinitiv.

  1. Not:


    2. Vezi mai sus conjugarea verbului to work = a munci (verb regulat folosit si in lectia 'timpurile verbelor').
    Conjugarea este la toate timpurile, inclusiv cele simple care cer verbul to do - cazul 2


  2. Do Not:


    1. You do not believe him - Nu il crezi. (to believe = a crede)
    2. He does not talk - Nu vorbeste. (to talk = a vorbi)
    3. I did not do my homework - Nu mi-am facut tema. (folosire dubla a verbului to do = a face)
    4. She did not leave - Nu a plecat. (to leave = a pleca)
    5. She will not attend - Nu va participa. (to attend = a partcipa)


  3. Must Not:


    1. You must not believe him - Sa nu il crezi!
    2. He must not talk after surgery - Nu are voie sa vorbeasca dupa operatie (after = dupa, surgery = operatie)
    3. I mustn't do my homework in a hurry - Nu e voie sa-mi fac temele in graba (in a hurry = in graba)
    4. She mustn't leave - Nu trebuie sa plece
    5. She mustn't attend - Trebuie sa nu participe


  4. Can not:


    1. I can't believe you - Nu pot sa te cred
    2. He can't talk - Nu poate sa vorbeasca
    3. I can't do my homework - Nu pot sa imi fac temele
    4. I couldn't do my homework - Nu puteam sa-mi fac lectiile
    5. She can't leave - Nu (se) poate sa plece
    6. She couldn't leave - Nu putea sa plece
    7. She can't attend - Nu poate participa
    8. She will not be able to attend - Nu va putea sa participe
